Man Charged with Shooting Photographer Near Railroad Tracks

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A man has been arrested after allegedly shooting a photographer near railroad tracks in Memphis. Steven Painter is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

The incident took place on November 19 at the intersection of Chelsea Avenue and Bayliss Avenue. The victim, a photographer, had been following a train route to capture images of intersections and train yards. While taking photos, he was approached by a dark green GMC Yukon. The passenger in the vehicle offered assistance and then demanded money from the victim. When the victim stated he had no money, the suspect threatened him with a gun and demanded his phone.

Fearing for his safety, the victim fled to his vehicle, a 2019 Hyundai Velostor, parked across the street. The GMC Yukon pursued him and pulled up alongside his car. The passenger then fired a single shot through the windshield, striking the victim in the right shoulder. The suspects quickly fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery for a fractured pubis. The injury is expected to require a significant recovery period.

Three days later, on November 22, police identified Steven Painter as the shooter. The victim positively identified Painter in a photographic lineup consisting of six individuals.

The arrest of Painter brings some relief to the victim and the local community, as this incident highlights the importance of public safety and the need to address gun violence. Authorities are continuing their investigation and encourage anyone with additional information to come forward.
