Kenyan Student in Canada Among Victims of Mass Shooting in Winnipeg

A Kenyan man studying in Canada has been identified as one of the victims of a mass shooting that occurred on Sunday, November 26. Melelek Leseri Lesikel, a 29-year-old biology student at the University of Manitoba, was shot dead alongside three others during the tragic incident at 143 Langside St.

Lesikel, known for his friendly nature, had completed his Bachelor of Sciences degree and had applied to become a permanent resident of Canada. He had been living alone in an apartment in the Earl Grey neighborhood.

Nosherwan Khilji, Lesikel’s friend and former roommate, described him as a soft and nice person who always had a smile on his face. Pamela Obonde, president of the Kenya Association of Manitoba, revealed that Lesikel had a brother in the United States while other family members were in Kenya.

The Winnipeg Police Service responded to the scene after receiving a report of multiple injured people. Five victims with gunshot wounds were found, and three others were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, one of the injured individuals later succumbed to their injuries. The police are fully committed to investigating the incident and have allocated all necessary resources for the investigation.

This tragic event has left both the Kenyan community in Canada and Lesikel’s family in Kenya devastated. It serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing gun violence and promoting community safety.

The Winnipeg Police assured the public that they are determined to determine what took place and bring justice to the victims. The incident has shocked the community, and support has poured in for Lesikel’s family and friends during this difficult time.

This is not the first time that a Kenyan has lost their life abroad. Last year, Albert Chelimo died in the United States, leaving his family and the entire country in mourning. The loss of these young individuals highlights the need for continued efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of Kenyans living abroad.

The investigation into the mass shooting in Winnipeg is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
