Justin Holman has been found guilty of reckless homicide and kidnapping in the death of 50-year-old Shanel Smith. Smith’s body was discovered outside a business on the east side of Indianapolis in February 2021.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a call about an unresponsive person near the intersection of 38th St. and Mitthoeffer Road. Officers found Smith and called for medical assistance, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner later determined that Smith’s cause of death was “Environmental Cold Exposure” and classified it as a homicide.

Prosecutor Ryan Mears commented on the case, stating, “The defendant displayed a complete disregard for Ms. Smith’s life. I commend the efforts of our trial team and investigators to ensure justice for her and her family.”
