Opelousas Police Investigate Two Shootings in Louisiana

Opelousas, Louisiana – The Opelousas Police Department is currently investigating two separate shooting incidents that occurred over the past few days. The first incident took place on Friday, November 24, near the intersection of S. Railroad Ave. and W. Jefferson St., where an adult male was injured.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Clarence Espree, a 23-year-old resident of Opelousas. According to the initial investigation, Espree fired multiple shots into a vehicle carrying the victim and two other passengers. The shooting was motivated by an ongoing dispute between Espree and the occupants of the targeted vehicle. Although the victim sustained serious injuries, they are not life-threatening.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Clarence Espree on three charges, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property, and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities. Opelousas Police are urging anyone with information about Espree’s whereabouts to contact them or provide an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2500.

The second shooting occurred on Monday night in the 600 block of W. Cherry St. Witnesses reported seeing a suspect, identified as Cory Tyler, firing a long gun. Responding officers were given a location where Tyler was last seen. During their search, they received information that a male victim had arrived at a local hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Officers were able to locate the firearm used in the shooting and apprehend Cory Tyler. Further investigation revealed that the gun had been stolen from a local law enforcement agency in August 2022 and was capable of firing in full-auto mode.

Cory Tyler has been booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on charges of attempted second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, illegal possession of stolen firearms, illegal carry of weapons, and possession of a machine gun.

Opelousas Police are once again appealing to the public for any information related to this shooting. They can be reached through their phone line, email, or Crime Stoppers. Tipsters can remain anonymous and may receive a cash reward of up to $2500.
