Breakthrough in Decades-Old Massachusetts Homicide Case: Victim Identified Through DNA Analysis

After almost forty years, a major breakthrough has occurred in a long-unsolved Massachusetts murder case with the identification of skeletal remains discovered in 1985 along Interstate 195 in Fairhaven. The remains, found in the bushes in the breakdown lane and around 45 feet from the road, have been identified as Keith Olson, a 27-year-old man from Cranston, Rhode Island, through DNA analysis and genealogical data.

A breakthrough in the case came through the Unidentified Bodies Project, an initiative aimed at using advanced technology to identify human remains. Through forensic genetic genealogy and collaboration with a private laboratory in Texas and the Investigative Genetic Genealogy branch of the FBI, investigators were able to establish a family tree and positively identify the remains as those of Keith Olson.

Olson was last seen in April 1981. His disappearance was reported shortly after his relationship with a woman led to tension between him and John Broccoli of North Providence, who had also been involved with the same woman. A witness reported seeing two men leading Olson away from his Cranston apartment on the day he went missing. Broccoli made mysterious statements to the woman he had been dating, implying his potential involvement.

The discovery of Olson’s remains in 1985 marked the start of a lengthy process to identify the victim. Despite extensive efforts, including comparing dental records and creating a facial reconstruction based on the skull, the victim remained unidentified for 38 years.

The identification of Olson’s remains has sparked renewed interest in the case, shedding light on his relationship, the events leading up to his disappearance, and the possible involvement of individuals in his death. John Broccoli, also known as Michael Corleone, was identified as a person of interest. Despite his death in 2019, his alleged mysterious statements and reported tension with Olson have raised suspicions about his potential involvement in the crime. The District Attorney’s Office has stressed that they believe the crime was committed by at least two people and has appealed to the public for any information regarding Olson’s disappearance and death.
