Skeletal remains found along a Massachusetts highway nearly four decades ago have finally been identified through DNA as the victim of a homicide. The discovery was made on April 8, 1985, when a motorist traveling on Interstate 195 in Fairhaven stopped in a breakdown lane and spotted the remains about 45 feet from the roadway. Despite thorough investigations at the time, no information related to the identity of the deceased was found.

The skeletal remains were sent to the FBI lab in Washington, D.C., where tests revealed that the remains belonged to a man who was killed a few years before the discovery. A pair of shoes found at the scene were also determined to have been manufactured in 1981. Attempts to identify the individual through dental records and media appeals were unsuccessful, leaving the remains unidentified for 38 years.

In recent efforts to solve unidentified body cases, a private laboratory in Texas collaborated with the FBI’s Investigative Genetic Genealogy team to identify the remains. Through forensic genetic genealogy, the remains were identified as those of 27-year-old Keith Olson, a native of Cranston, Rhode Island, who had been missing since April 1981. Olson was dating a woman at the time of his disappearance, which caused friction between him and John Broccoli, a resident of North Providence who had previously been involved with the same woman.

Broccoli, also known as Michael Corleone, died in 2019 at the age of 63. Investigators now believe that at least two people were involved in Olson’s murder and are seeking information from the public to help solve the crime. Anyone with information is urged to contact Massachusetts State Police Detective Lt. Ann Marie Robertson.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts to solve cold cases and bring closure to families. Through advancements in DNA technology and forensic genealogy, previously unidentified remains can now be linked to missing persons and potential suspects. The identification of Keith Olson’s remains is a significant step forward in the investigation, and investigators hope that the public’s assistance will help provide further information and bring justice to his case.
