Burlington, VT (KMVT/KSVT) — A vigil was held by Brown University students last night in Vermont for wounded Palestinian student Hisham Awartani. The incident occurred on Saturday night in Burlington, where three Palestinian students, identified as Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad, and Kinnan Abdalhamid, all aged 20, were shot.

The victims sustained gunshot wounds to the spine, chest, and buttocks, and are currently receiving medical care. Authorities have confirmed that the students were shot while walking near the University of Vermont, close to Awartani’s grandmother’s house. The shooting took place after the students had spent the afternoon at a bowling alley.

The accused, 48-year-old Jason J. Eaton, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges on Monday. He was ordered by the judge to be held without bond. Eaton attended the University of Idaho intermittently from 1998 to 2020, according to a university spokesperson. However, he did not graduate and was reportedly seven credits short of completing his general studies bachelor’s degree.

Eaton’s focus of study was natural resources, as reported by various national media outlets. His connection to the university has raised questions about his background and possible motives for the attack on the Palestinian students.

The incident has sparked concern among the student community, prompting Brown University students to organize the vigil as a show of solidarity and support for Hisham Awartani and his fellow wounded students. The vigil aimed to raise awareness about the incident and to call for justice for the victims.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting and are working to determine the motives behind the attack. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering a safe and inclusive environment on college campuses, where students from diverse backgrounds can pursue their education without fear of violence or discrimination.
