A body discovered nearly 40 years ago in Fairhaven, Massachusetts has been identified as a murder victim from Rhode Island, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. The remains were found by a driver on Interstate 195 on April 8, 1985, who immediately alerted the police. After examination at the FBI lab in Washington, D.C., it was determined that the remains belonged to a white man who had been killed a few years prior to their discovery. The cause of death was determined to be homicide, as evidence of inflicted trauma was found during the forensic analysis.

Despite efforts to identify the man using methods such as facial reconstruction and dental record comparison, no success was achieved. However, with the help of Othram, a private laboratory in Texas, and the FBI’s Investigative Genetic Genealogy Team, a genetic profile was generated from the DNA evidence recovered from the skeleton. By connecting the man to a family tree, investigators were able to positively identify the remains as Keith Olson, a 27-year-old from Cranston, Rhode Island.

Olson had been reported missing on April 15, 1981, and was last seen in Cranston. Officials revealed that there was friction between Olson and John Broccoli, a North Providence resident, due to their involvement with the same woman Olson was dating. A witness reported seeing two men escort Olson from his Cranston apartment on the day he disappeared. Broccoli, also known as Michael Corleone, made cryptic statements to the woman, suggesting his possible involvement. Broccoli passed away in 2019 at the age of 63.

Investigators are now seeking the public’s help in providing any information related to Olson’s murder. They believe that at least two people were involved in the crime and are hopeful that there are individuals who could provide valuable information to solve the case. If anyone has information, they are urged to contact Massachusetts State Police Det. Lt. AnnMarie Robertson.

This case highlights the need for better coordination not only between counties but also between states. The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office is appealing to anyone with a missing relative to contact Robertson and provide a DNA sample to be included in the National Missing and Unidentified Person System (NamUs). These samples can be crucial in comparing with unidentified bodies nationwide.
