Western New York Couple Identified as Victims in Niagara Falls Border Bridge Crash

Niagara Falls, New York – A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when a luxury car crashed into a border checkpoint and exploded in a fiery wreck, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The victims have been identified as Kurt P. Villani and Monica Villani, both 53 years old and residents of Grand Island, a suburb located between Buffalo and Niagara Falls.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is still ongoing, with authorities considering medical or mechanical issues as potential factors. Niagara Falls Police Chief John Faso stated that the car, a 2022 Bentley Flying Spur, raced through an intersection, hit a low median, and became airborne before colliding with security booths at the Rainbow Bridge and bursting into flames.

Kurt and Monica Villani were prominent figures in their community, as their family owns Gui’s Lumber and seven Ace Hardware locations in western New York. The Villani family has been operating the business since the mid-1980s. Their philanthropic efforts were well-known, including an annual tradition of donating 250 turkeys to a local food drive.

The incident caused great concern on both sides of the border, with video and images of the aftermath circulating online. The bridge was closed, along with three other nearby crossings, as authorities conducted an extensive investigation. The FBI’s Buffalo office confirmed that there were no indications of a terror attack, leading the case to be handed over to local police for a traffic investigation.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the scene as “surreal,” with the vehicle being completely incinerated, leaving only the engine and charred debris. The crash investigation is expected to take time due to its complexity.

The loss of Kurt and Monica Villani has left a void in the close-knit business community they were a part of. The Grand Island Chamber of Commerce president, Eric Fiebelkorn, expressed his condolences and highlighted the couple’s generosity and support for their community.
