Tragic Stampede at Cochin University of Science and Technology Claims Four Lives

The Kerala government has taken action following a tragic stampede at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) on Saturday, which resulted in the unfortunate deaths of four students. In response to the incident, the government has directed the principal secretary of higher education and the university vice-chancellor to submit inquiry reports.

The stampede occurred during a music festival at CUSAT in Kochi, just before singer Nikhita Gandhi’s performance. The day after the incident, the shoes and slippers of the students involved were still present in the auditorium, serving as a grim reminder of the tragedy.

In an effort to prevent such incidents in the future, the government is issuing proper guidelines and taking precautionary measures. This kind of event is not uncommon at the university, as they often organize tech fests and competitions. However, this is the first time a tragic incident of this nature has occurred.

Minister R Bindu expressed her condolences and stated that an inquiry is being conducted to determine the cause of the stampede. She has ordered the principal secretary of higher education and the university vice-chancellor to submit reports on the incident.

In the latest updates, the Kerala government has formed an expert committee to investigate the stampede at the Cochin University festival. They have also requested incident reports from the university vice-chancellor and the principal secretary of the Higher Education Department.

It has been revealed that police advisories on crowd control for auditoriums in Ernakulam were announced, but educational institutions were excluded. The Kochi City Police Commissioner has stated that there was no official request for police assistance from the university.

The bodies of the three deceased students have been brought to the university campus for tributes, while the fourth victim has been identified as a resident of Palakkad named Alwin. There are currently two critical cases in a private hospital’s ICU, three in the Kalamassery government medical college hospital’s ICU, and 31 students in stable condition in the general ward.

Singer Nikhita Gandhi expressed her condolences on Facebook, mentioning that the incident occurred before she could reach the venue. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has held an emergency meeting to address the situation and offer his condolences for the loss of the students’ lives.
