Singer Nikhita Gandhi expresses grief over stampede at Cochin University concert

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], November 26 (ANI): Singer Nikhita Gandhi has expressed her grief over the stampede that occurred during her concert at Cochin University’s annual festival, which resulted in the death of four individuals.

Taking to her Instagram handle, Gandhi shared a heartfelt post, expressing her sorrow over the incident and offering condolences to the families of the victims. “Heartbroken and devastated by what took place this evening in Kochi. Such an unfortunate incident occurred before I could even leave for the venue for the performance. No words are enough to express this profound grief. My prayers go out to the families of the students,” she posted on Instagram.

The stampede took place during a music tech festival, claiming the lives of Athul Thambi, Ann Ruftha, Sara Thomas, and Alwin Thaikattusherry. Three of them were second-year students, while Alwin was not a student at CUSAT.

According to the police, 16 injured individuals have been discharged from the hospital so far. Kerala’s Higher Education Minister, R Bindu, has directed the principal secretary of Higher Education and the varsity’s vice chancellor to submit their inquiry reports on the incident.

An eyewitness to the situation at the university, Jalsan, described the events, stating, “This happened around 6.50 pm. When I arrived here, three to four students were taken to the hospital. It was drizzling. Students rushed in through the only entrance, and due to steep steps, they fell over each other, leading to a stampede.”

Ministers P Rajeev and R Bindu visited the site of the incident on Sunday morning. The officials have also informed that the mortal remains of the deceased will be kept for the public to pay their respects at the CUSAT campus after the post-mortem.

The tragedy has left the music industry and the university community in shock, with many expressing their condolences and calling for better safety measures at such events. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are working to ensure the safety of future events.
