Taking to her Instagram account, Gandhi posted a heartfelt message, expressing her grief and offering condolences to the families affected by the incident. She wrote, “I am heartbroken and devastated by what transpired this evening in Kochi. A deeply unfortunate incident occurred before I could even reach the venue for my performance. The stampede occurred during a music tech festival at the university. The four victims have been identified as Athul Thambi, Ann Ruftha, Sara Thomas, and Alwin Thaikattusherry. While the first three were second-year students, Alwin Thaikattusherry was not a student at CUSAT.

The police have reported that 16 injured individuals have been discharged from the hospital. Ministers P Rajeev and R Bindu visited the site of the incident on Sunday morning to assess the situation.

Kerala’s Higher Education Minister, R Bindu, has directed the principal secretary of Higher Education and the university’s vice chancellor to submit their inquiry reports on the incident.

An eyewitness, Jalsan, recounted the incident, stating that it occurred around 6:50 pm. He mentioned that when he arrived at the scene, several students had already been taken to the hospital. Due to the rainy weather, students hurriedly rushed through the only entrance, and the steep steps caused them to fall over each other, resulting in the stampede.

Officials have informed that the mortal remains of the deceased will be kept at the CUSAT campus for the public to pay their respects after the post-mortem.
