Sikh Man Gurdev Singh Shot Dead in Manila, Philippines

A Sikh man from Khanna town in Ludhiana district has been fatally shot in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. The family of the deceased received a call on Saturday evening informing them about the incident.

The victim, identified as Gurdev Singh, was a 58-year-old resident of Nand Singh Avenue in Khanna. He had been working as a financier in the Philippines. According to Lakhwinder Singh, a relative of Gurdev, both the deceased and his son worked as financiers in Manila. However, Gurdev’s son had returned home, leaving Gurdev living alone in the Philippine capital. Lakhwinder revealed that Gurdev was shot by unidentified assailants on Saturday afternoon while he was returning home from work.

Gurdev had been in the Philippines for nearly five years, starting his financial business there. He had visited his family a few months ago before returning to Manila. The family mentioned that Gurdev had spoken to his daughter via video call just minutes before the cold-blooded murder occurred.

Gurdev is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son, with one of his daughters already married. The family is now seeking the assistance of the central government to repatriate Gurdev’s body as soon as possible. Lakhwinder expressed concerns that it may take 10-15 days or longer to bring the body back. The family urged the government to provide assistance in expediting the process. Although financial issues are suspected to be the motive behind the killing, no concrete information has been confirmed yet.

Another relative, Lakhvir Singh Bhatti, highlighted the safety concerns faced by Punjabis abroad and called on the central government to take the matter seriously.

The tragic incident emphasizes the need for increased security measures and support for Indian citizens living and working overseas. The government should prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad, ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to protect them from such incidents.
