South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is currently investigating a shooting involving an officer in Aiken County. On Sunday at around 1:05 a.m., deputies were called to the 300 block of Depot Avenue Northeast in Salley, which is located approximately 26 miles east of Aiken. The reason for the call was a report of an armed suspect with a shotgun who had visited a resident’s home and then left.

Upon arrival, deputies conducted a search in the area and located the suspect walking with the shotgun. Initially, the suspect refused to comply with orders to drop the weapon and continued walking away. Eventually, he did put the shotgun down, but then he placed one hand behind his back and into his waistband, while still ignoring commands from the deputies. To subdue him, a beanbag round was used, but the suspect unexpectedly pulled out a handgun and fired at the deputies. In response, the deputies returned fire.
