The execution of a 17-year-old murderer in Iran has caused outrage among the international community. Human rights groups are expressing their distress over the country’s use of capital punishment for crimes committed by minors. This controversial event has sparked heated online discussions, with many seeking further information about the incident.

The teenager who was executed has been identified as Hamidreza Azari. Reports state that Azari was executed on Friday in a prison in the eastern town of Sabzebar, in the Razavi Khorasan province. According to the Norway-based Hengaw and Iran Human Rights (IHR) groups, Azari had been working as a scrap worker for several years and was an only child.

Documents provided by Hengaw and IHR reveal that Azari was only 16 years old when he committed the crime that led to his execution at the age of 17. He was sentenced to death for fatally injuring someone during a fight in May. Rights groups point out that this execution violates the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which recognizes anyone under the age of 18 as a child.

Iran is known for its practice of capital punishment for juvenile offenders, which is still enforced in only a few countries. According to IHR, Iran has executed more minors than any other country. Since 2010, approximately 68 minors have been executed in Iran, according to the group’s data. Mahmood-Amiry Moghaddam, the director of IHR, criticizes Iran’s contradictory laws, as the country permits the execution of 15-year-olds but requires individuals to be 18 to obtain a driver’s license.

On the same day as Azari’s execution, another man in his early 20s was also executed. This individual, whose identity remains unknown, was reportedly the eighth person to be hanged in connection to nationwide protests that took place in September 2022. Updates on this developing story will be provided.
