Iran has carried out the execution of a 17-year-old boy named Hamidreza Azari, who was convicted of murder, according to reports from the Norway-based Hengaw and Iran Human Rights (IHR) groups. The execution took place on November 24 in the town of Sabzevar in Razavi Khorasan province, as stated by the two organizations.
Azari, who was the only child in his family, was sentenced to death after being found guilty of killing a man during a brawl in May of this year. The execution of a minor has drawn criticism from human rights groups, who argue that it violates the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which defines a child as anyone under 18 years old.

The IHR highlighted that Iran stands out as one of the few countries that sentences child convicts to death, with more juvenile executions than any other nation. Their data shows that since 2010, at least 68 minors have been executed in Iran.
The decision to execute Azari has sparked outrage, with rights groups condemning Iran’s actions. The IHR director, Moghaddam, pointed out the inconsistency in Iran’s laws, stating that while someone must be 18 years old to obtain a driver’s license, a 15-year-old is considered old enough to be executed.
According to the IHR, Iran has executed 684 individuals this year, primarily on charges related to drugs and murder.
The execution of Azari has once again brought international attention to Iran’s human rights record. The country has faced repeated criticism for its use of the death penalty, particularly for juvenile offenders. This case further emphasizes the urgent need for Iran to review its laws and adhere to international standards regarding the treatment of minors in the justice system.
