Investigation continues into the tragic incident that occurred on Wednesday at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, where a vehicle exploded at a checkpoint. The two individuals who lost their lives in the fiery wreck have now been identified as Kurt P Villani and Monica Villani, both 53 years old and residents of Grand Island, a suburb near Niagara Falls.

The couple was driving their luxury car, a 2022 Bentley Flying Spur, when it crashed into a row of security booths at the bridge. The impact caused the vehicle to burst into flames, resulting in a devastating scene. Authorities are currently working to determine the cause of the crash, including whether any medical or mechanical issues played a role.

Kurt and Monica Villani were well-known in the community as owners of Gui’s Lumber and several Ace Hardware locations in western New York. They had been operating the family business since the 1980s. In a joint statement released by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, the families and the lumber company expressed their gratitude for the support and requested privacy as they begin the healing process.

The incident prompted concerns on both sides of the US-Canada border, leading to the closure of the Rainbow Bridge and three other nearby crossings. However, after several hours of investigation, the FBI’s Buffalo office confirmed that there were no indications of a terror attack. The case has since been handed over to local police as a traffic investigation.

The tragedy has left the community mourning the loss of the Villani family. Eric Fiebelkorn, president of the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the couple’s generosity and support for the community. He mentioned that their contributions were often understated, and the loss of the Villanis has created a void in the close-knit business community.

The Niagara Falls Police Department has acknowledged the complexity of the crash investigation, which may take some time to conclude. The Rainbow Bridge, a popular crossing point between the US and Canada, sees approximately 6,000 vehicles pass through each day. The bridge, known for its scenic views of Niagara Falls, will remain closed until authorities complete their investigation.
