Jadavpur University Bans Six Students Linked to Death of First-Year Student in Campus Tragedy

Jadavpur University in Kolkata has taken the decision to ban six students from campus following their alleged involvement in the death of a first-year student in August. The university has stated that these students will not be allowed to enter the campus or hostel until they are legally acquitted.

The 17-year-old student tragically died after falling from the balcony of his hostel on the night of August 9. A committee set up by the university to investigate the incident concluded that he had been subjected to severe ragging prior to his death.

The six accused students, namely Deepshekhar Dutta, Monotosh Ghosh, Asif Afzal Ansari, Satyabrata Sarkar, Ankan Sarkar, and Arif, are currently in jail and will remain barred from the campus and hostel facilities until they are legally proven innocent.

It is important to note that Saurabh Chowdhury, another person linked to the case, was not included in the notice as he is no longer a student at the university.

The university’s registrar office has sent out the notification to the relevant departments, ensuring that the ban is enforced.

In response to the internal investigation committee’s findings regarding the student’s ragging, the university has established an ‘anti-ragging squad’ under the guidance of the new interim vice-chancellor, Buddhadev Sahu. This squad aims to address and prevent such incidents in the future.

This decision by Jadavpur University is part of their commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students. By taking strict action against those involved in the student’s death, the university is sending a strong message against any form of ragging or harassment on campus.

The ban on these six students will remain in effect until they are proven innocent through the legal process. It is hoped that this incident serves as a deterrent and leads to increased awareness and prevention of ragging in educational institutions.
