South Portland police are currently investigating two separate incidents this week that involved gunfire. On Wednesday evening, at around 8:30 p.m., officers responded to an armed home invasion at 114 Sawyer Street. Shots were fired during the incident, but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. However, the two suspects managed to escape and are still at large. Although the police have assured the public that there is no immediate threat, some residents in the area remain on edge. Steve Sunenblick, a long-time South Portland resident, expressed his surprise at the incident, stating that nothing of this nature had ever occurred in the neighborhood during his 50 years of living there. Another resident, Beth Sunenblick, found the presence of firearms particularly concerning.

While the police were still investigating the home invasion on Sawyer Street, they noticed a vehicle crossing the Casco Bay Bridge that was fleeing another incident involving gunfire. This second incident occurred at around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, near 262 Commercial Street in Portland. The suspect swiftly left the scene and drove into South Portland, leading the police on a pursuit along Broadway and eventually onto Morse Street, a dead-end road. The suspect then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, running through nearby yards and even breaking through a wooden fence.

The police eventually arrested the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Mohamud Abdullahi from Buxton. Abdullahi is facing charges of reckless conduct related to the shots fired on Commercial Street. Additionally, he is being charged with refusing to submit to arrest and assaulting an officer after allegedly spitting in the face of a police officer.

Authorities are still searching for the suspects involved in the home invasion on Sawyer Street. They are urging residents in the vicinity to review any security or doorbell footage they may have and report any suspicious activity to the South Portland police.
