Delhi Police are facing a baffling situation as they grapple with a missing person case that has taken a dramatic turn. It all began in November 2018 when a 23-year-old woman named Sheetal went missing, and her father, Ravinder Chaudhary, was accused of killing her in the name of honor. However, last month, the results of two DNA tests revealed that a decomposed body found in a canal near Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh in February 2020 was not Sheetal’s.
The case took a twist when additional sessions judge Vishal Gogne granted bail to Ravinder on November 18, stating that there was a strong likelihood that the body recovered from the canal was not Sheetal’s. Her husband, Ankit Bhati, who had identified the body as Sheetal’s, has not responded to requests for comment on the recent developments.

The timeline of events leading up to the discovery of the body reveals a complicated situation. Ankit had filed a police complaint in February 2020, stating that his wife had been missing since January 18. The complaint alleged that Sheetal’s parents had intentionally kidnapped her and hid her somewhere, as they were against their marriage due to belonging to the same gotra.
When the UP police reached out to their Delhi counterparts, they were informed that a decomposed female body had been found in the canal near Bulandshahr. Ankit identified the body based on a photograph and a bundle of clothes, claiming that he had gifted those clothes to his wife, who also had dental braces.
Based on Ankit’s identification and the DNA test that did not match Ravinder’s DNA, Ravinder, his wife Suman, and relatives were arrested on charges of murder. However, the recent DNA test results have thrown the case into disarray, leaving the Delhi Police with no victim and no accused.
The case raises questions about the investigation conducted by the Delhi Police and their UP counterparts. Ravinder’s lawyer alleges that the Delhi Police made arrests solely based on Ankit’s statement without verifying the facts. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police accuse the UP Police of negligence, claiming that Sheetal’s body may have been switched with another unidentified body.
