A top official from Hamas’ naval forces was killed in an airstrike in southern Gaza, announced the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Thursday. The IDF identified the deceased as Amar Abu Jalalah, the commander of Hamas’ naval forces. Fighter jets targeted him in Khan Yunis, the largest city in southern Gaza, according to a statement released by the IDF. The IDF stated that Abu Jalalah was involved in directing several failed terror attacks by sea.

Israel has been actively targeting upper-level Hamas military operatives, aiming to cripple their command structure. According to a senior IDF official, the military has had success in eliminating key Hamas figures. Since the start of the war on October 7, 10 out of 24 Hamas military battalions have been significantly impacted. In the northern part of Gaza, some battalions lost more than half of their senior command, making it harder for Hamas leaders to order counterattacks.
