Researchers Discover New Species of Gecko in India: Cnemaspis fortis, The Brave Dwarf Gecko

By | November 24, 2023

A new species of gecko has been discovered in India, according to a recent study. Researchers found these small geckos, described as “dwarf”-like with short bodies, curved claws, and pointed spikes among their scales, in a Buddhist cave in Maharashtra in 2021. The findings were published in Taprobanica: The Journal of Asian Biodiversity.

The study, conducted by Amit Sayyed, revealed that these geckos measure just 2.3 inches in length, making them the second-smallest known Indian dwarf gekkonid. What surprised the researchers was the unexpected behavior of the geckos when approached by humans. Unlike most geckos, they did not retreat significantly. This boldness led to the creature being named Cnemaspis fortis, or “the brave dwarf gecko.”

The geckos were found around the Gandharpale Caves of Maharashtra, which are located approximately 100 miles southeast of Mumbai and 700 miles southwest of New Delhi. Their habitat in the northern Western Ghats in India has proven to be an ideal environment for them to thrive.

Sayyed noted that the geckos showed remarkable boldness and bravery, which influenced their naming. This new species’s behavior has fascinated researchers and provides valuable insights into their unique characteristics and adaptations.

The discovery of this new gecko species highlights the importance of biodiversity research and conservation efforts in India. Each new species identified adds to our understanding of the natural world and emphasizes the need to protect these delicate ecosystems.

Further studies will be conducted to learn more about the behavior, reproductive habits, and habitat requirements of the Cnemaspis fortis species. Researchers hope that this discovery will generate more interest and support for the conservation of these unique geckos and their fragile environment.
