A tragic incident occurred in Karachi on Thursday when a motorcycle-rider lost his life and his pillion rider sustained injuries in a collision with a speeding car. The car was allegedly being driven by an intoxicated police officer on Rashid Minhas Road in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
The deceased has been identified as 60-year-old Bashir Ahmed Siddiqui, son of Sheikh Naeemullah, while the injured person is Abdul Karim, son of Fazal Din. Siddiqui, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, was a father of four, with two sons settled in Australia and Saudi Arabia, a daughter residing in the USA, and another living with him and his wife in Karachi.

Eyewitnesses at the scene managed to apprehend the car driver and his companion as they tried to flee. They handed them over to the police, revealing that both individuals appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
Shockingly, it was later discovered that the reckless driver was a police officer. Concerns have been raised about attempts within the police department to protect him. As soon as his identity was disclosed, the law enforcement officers not only showed him respect but also concealed him in a separate room at the office of Shahid Rao, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Yousuf.
Disturbingly, the SHO allegedly tried to dissuade the grieving family from filing a First Information Report (FIR) by advising them to settle the matter privately. Furthermore, the SHO refused to disclose any details of the case to the media.
This incident highlights the need for accountability within the police force and the urgent need to address the issue of drunk driving. The loss of life and the injuries sustained by the pillion rider could have been prevented if appropriate measures were taken to ensure public safety.
