Man Kills Wife and Daughter with Snake in Odisha’s Ganjam District

A man in Odisha’s Ganjam district reportedly killed his wife and daughter by releasing a venomous snake on them while they slept. The police investigation revealed that the man, K. Ganesh, a migrant worker from Adheibara village, committed the heinous act due to a family dispute stemming from an alleged dowry demand.

According to the police, the couple got married in 2020 and initially seemed happy. However, marital problems arose, leading the wife, K. Basanti Patra, to file a police complaint accusing her husband of dowry torture. Consequently, they lived separately for a while but later decided to reconcile.

Ganesh, still harboring bitterness towards his wife, conspired to kill her. On September 26, he contacted several snake charmers, convincing them that he needed a snake for worship at a local Lord Shiva temple. One snake charmer, Basanta Acharya, provided Ganesh with a venomous snake in a plastic jar.

Keeping the snake hidden, Ganesh waited for the opportune moment. On the night of October 6, he released the snake into the room where his wife and daughter were sleeping. The snake bit both of them, resulting in their instant death. The next morning, Ganesh informed his neighbors about the tragic incident.

Suspicions arose, prompting the wife’s father to file a police complaint, urging further investigation. During the interrogation, Ganesh confessed to the crime and was subsequently produced in court.

This shocking incident highlights the grim reality of dowry-related disputes in India and the extreme measures some individuals resort to. The loss of two lives due to such a dispute is a tragic reminder of the urgent need for societal change and the eradication of dowry demands.

Authorities will continue to investigate the case to ensure justice is served. Meanwhile, the local community is left in shock and mourning for the loss of the young mother and daughter.
