A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Odisha’s Ganjam district for allegedly killing his wife and two-year-old daughter by releasing a venomous snake into their room. The accused, identified as K Ganesh Patra, had been having a marital dispute with his wife, K Basanti Patra. They were married in 2020 and had a two-year-old daughter named Debasmita.
According to the police, the accused had procured a snake from a snake charmer, misleading him by saying that he would use the reptile for religious purposes. On October 6, he brought a cobra in a plastic jar and released it into the room where his wife and daughter slept. The next morning, both were found dead with snake bites, while the accused slept in another room.

Initially, the police had registered an unnatural death case, but after the father-in-law lodged an FIR accusing the accused of being involved in the deaths, they questioned him. Ganjam Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Meena stated that the accused was arrested a month after the incident due to a delay in gathering evidence. During interrogation, the accused initially denied the allegations but later confessed to the crime. The SP added that further investigation is underway.
The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about the safety of women and children. Domestic violence and disputes within marriages have become increasingly common, leading to tragic outcomes like this one.
The accused will face charges of murder and is expected to face a trial in court.
