A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Odisha’s Ganjam district for allegedly killing his wife and two-year-old daughter by releasing a venomous snake into their room, according to the police. The incident occurred in Adheigaon village in Kabisurya Nagar area, located approximately 60 km from Berhampur.
The accused, identified as K Ganesh Patra, had been having marital troubles with his 23-year-old wife, K Basanti Patra. The couple got married in 2020 and had a two-year-old daughter named Debasmita. The police revealed that the accused had deceived a snake charmer into selling him a snake by falsely claiming that he needed it for religious purposes.

On October 6, Patra brought a cobra in a plastic jar and released it into the room where his wife and daughter were sleeping. The following morning, both victims were found dead with snake bites, while the accused slept in another room.
Initially, the police registered an unnatural death case. However, after Patra’s father-in-law filed a First Information Report (FIR) accusing him of involvement in the deaths, the police questioned the accused. Ganjam Superintendent of Police, Jagmohan Meena, stated that the accused was arrested a month after the incident due to a delay in collecting evidence against him. During interrogation, Patra initially denied the allegations but later admitted to committing the crime while claiming that the snake may have entered the room on its own.
Further investigation is currently underway in this shocking case. The accused now faces legal consequences for his actions.
