Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Wife and Daughter by Releasing Venomous Snake into Their Room in Odisha

A man in Odisha’s Ganjam district has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife and two-year-old daughter by releasing a venomous snake into their room. The 25-year-old accused, identified as K Ganesh Patra, had a marital dispute with his 23-year-old wife K Basanti Patra. They were married in 2020 and had a two-year-old daughter named Debasmita.

According to the police, the accused had deceived a snake charmer into giving him a snake by claiming he needed it for religious purposes. On October 6, Patra brought a cobra in a plastic jar and released it into the room where his wife and daughter were sleeping. The next morning, both were found dead from snake bites, while the accused slept in another room.

Initially, the police registered an unnatural death case. However, after Patra’s father-in-law filed an FIR accusing him of involvement in the deaths, the police interrogated the accused. Ganjam Superintendent of Police, Jagmohan Meena, stated that there was a delay in gathering evidence against Patra, leading to his arrest a month after the incident.

During the interrogation, the accused initially denied the allegations but later confessed to the crime. He claimed that the snake may have entered the room on its own, but ultimately admitted to intentionally releasing it. The police are continuing their investigation into the case.

The incident has shocked the local community in Adheigaon village, located in the Kabisurya Nagar area, approximately 60 km from Berhampur. The motive behind the heinous act is yet to be determined, and the police are working to uncover more details surrounding the case.
