Four Chandigarh Police personnel arrested in connection with 2019 salary scam

Four Chandigarh Police personnel have been arrested in connection with the 2019 salary scam. The arrested individuals have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) Mohan Singh and Krishan Kumar, as well as head constables Alwinder Singh and Mukesh Kumar.

According to the police, these four officers were among more than 100 who benefited from the salary scam, with a substantial amount of money being credited to their accounts. The ongoing investigation into the scam revealed that these officers had not returned the excess money that was credited to them.

A police officer stated, “These policemen were arrested during the ongoing investigation of the salary scam. They will be produced in the local court on Friday. So far, a dozen cops have been arrested in this scam.”

The salary scam came to light during an audit conducted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which revealed a scam amounting to around Rs 1 crore. An FIR was registered at Sector 3 police station in February 2020 under charges of forgery, cheating, and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The police have filed the main chargesheet, along with two supplementary chargesheets, in a district sessions court, and the case is currently pending trial. Additionally, departmental action has been initiated against the accused police personnel.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) responsible for the case successfully recovered the amount involved in the scam. Records from April 1, 2015, were procured, and extensive documentation was taken into police possession from various sources, including the Account Branch of Chandigarh Police and several banks.

Based on the evidence gathered, sections 201, 409, 467, 477A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 7 (b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act were added to the case, highlighting charges of destruction of vouchers and forgery.

Sources indicate that the maximum amount siphoned off to employees through undue benefits has already been recovered. The investigation into the salary scam continues, as more arrests and legal actions are expected in the coming days.
