55-year-old Ranjan Padhi succumbs to burn injuries after being set on fire by borrower for demanding money

A 55-year-old man in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi district, has died from severe burn injuries after being set on fire by a borrower who owed him money. The incident occurred on the night of November 15. The victim, identified as Ranjan Padhi, was rushed to the Bhawanipatna government hospital and then transferred to VIMSAR, Burla. Due to his worsening condition, he was further moved to SCB medical college and hospital in Cuttack, where he ultimately passed away.

The perpetrator, Basudev Chatria from Nuapada’s Komna area, was apprehended on November 16. The Bhawanipatna town IIC, Jasobant Hial, stated that Basudev Chatria was initially detained under section 307 of the IPC and subsequently sent to court. However, after the victim’s death, the case has been converted to section 302 of the IPC.

According to sources, Basudev had borrowed Rs 2 lakh from Ranjan but had not repaid the money. On the night of the incident, Basudev lured Ranjan to a secluded spot on the outskirts of Bhawanipatna town, promising to return the money. When Ranjan arrived at the location on his bike, Basudev approached him from behind, poured petrol on him, and set him on fire. Basudev then fled the scene. Eventually, some passersby heard Ranjan’s cries for help and transported him to the hospital.

This shocking incident highlights the dangers of financial disputes escalating to such extreme acts of violence. It raises concerns about the need for effective legal measures to protect individuals who lend money and prevent such tragic outcomes. The case has garnered significant attention, prompting discussions on the importance of addressing issues related to borrowing and lending practices in the region.
