Teen arrested after deputy fires shots during police pursuit in Lenawee County

A 16-year-old teenager has been taken into custody following a high-speed police pursuit in Lenawee County, Michigan. The incident occurred on Wednesday night when a deputy from the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office spotted an SUV driving recklessly and at a high speed on M-50 near Billmyer Highway.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the 16-year-old driver refused to stop and turned off their headlights. The pursuit continued into Ridgeway Township and Macon Township, where the sheriff’s office tried to lay down stop sticks at Holloway Road and Britton Highway. However, the driver managed to avoid the spike strips, turned off their headlights again, and drove off the road.

In a dangerous turn of events, the car then drove directly at a deputy, prompting the officer to fire two shots at the vehicle. Fortunately, the shots only struck the vehicle and did not harm the driver. The pursuit eventually crossed into Monroe County before the suspect finally came to a stop.

The 16-year-old driver, who hails from Macon Township, was subsequently arrested. The deputy who discharged their weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, as per standard protocol.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of both law enforcement officers and the public during high-speed pursuits. The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office is expected to thoroughly investigate the incident to determine whether the use of force was justified.
