A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night when a car plunged into a gorge along the Thamarassery ghat road, resulting in the death of a woman. The victim, identified as 35-year-old Rasheeda from Wayanad, was killed on the spot. The car, an Innova, was carrying a total of nine people at the time of the accident. Unfortunately, an 18-year-old girl is reported to be in critical condition.
The accident took place between the first and second hairpin bends of the ghat road as the car was descending. Two children, aged nine and fourteen, were among those injured in the incident.

The occupants of the car have been identified as Mohammed Shifin, Mohammed Shaan, Aslam, Jimshad, Mohammed Nishad, Riya, Asya, and Shaijal. The car had fallen a staggering 200 meters into the gorge.
Rescue operations were carried out by the Fireforce and members of the ghats protection council. They had to break open the car door to extract the passengers. The car had become lodged in a tree upon impact, and a palm tree had also fallen onto the vehicle. The rescue efforts were hindered by poor lighting conditions and heavy rainfall.
A crane was brought to the scene to aid in lifting the car out of the gorge. The difficult weather conditions made the rescue operations even more challenging.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by the Thamarassery ghat road. Authorities must take steps to ensure the safety of motorists traveling on this route. Measures such as improved signage, enhanced barriers, and regular maintenance should be implemented to prevent such accidents in the future.
