Suspect Arrested After High-Speed Chase and Crash in Hillsborough County
TAMPA, Fla. – A suspect has been apprehended in Hillsborough County after leading a Florida Highway Patrol trooper on a high-speed chase and crashing into a power pole early Thursday morning.

According to authorities, the incident began when troopers attempted to pull over the driver, identified as 54-year-old Ross Jones, for driving without tail lights and failing to maintain lanes on US 98 and Griffin Road in Lakeland.
Instead of stopping, the suspect accelerated and fled, initiating a pursuit by the FHP. The chase continued as the driver ran at least two red lights before heading towards Hillsborough County on I-4.
Reports indicate that the suspect reached speeds of up to 123 miles per hour before exiting the interstate. In an attempt to stop the driver, the pursuing trooper performed a PIT maneuver, causing the suspect’s vehicle to veer off the road and collide with a power pole.
The impact caused the power pole to fall onto a nearby business, resulting in significant damage. Jones, who was now on foot, attempted to escape, but the trooper quickly apprehended him. During the pursuit, the suspect dropped a handgun, which was recovered by authorities.

Jones has been taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated fleeing with damages, and driving with a suspended license. He has been transported to Orient Road Jail in Hillsborough County.
The Florida Highway Patrol estimates that the cost of damages to the power pole amounts to approximately $2,000. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident.
This arrest serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the importance of cooperation with law enforcement. The FHP commends the trooper for their swift action in apprehending the suspect and ensuring public safety.
