According to the affidavit, on 29th October 2023, Arnold Gene Sterling observed Reginald Griffin, identified as a black male, attempting to access the front driver’s side door of his wife’s white Toyota Camry. Sterling, who resided at the address in Davenport, exited his home and repeatedly shouted at Griffin to stop. Griffin fled the scene on foot, with Sterling in pursuit. During the chase, Sterling fired five shots from a pistol in Griffin’s direction, resulting in one gunshot wound to Griffin’s right flank.

Video footage captured the incident, clearly showing Griffin attempting to gain access to Sterling’s vehicle. He was dressed in dark clothing at the time and did not appear to remove any items from the car. Sterling’s wife confirmed that she had not given anyone permission to enter the vehicle.

Additional reports of vehicle burglaries were filed, one involving a Toyota Tacoma, from which approximately $10 in change and a garage door key were stolen. Another incident involved a Ram pickup truck, where the suspect attempted to open the doors but was unsuccessful. In both cases, the vehicle owners denied granting permission for anyone to enter their vehicles or remove any items.

During the investigation, it was discovered that after being shot, Griffin sought refuge at another residence. A search warrant executed at that address revealed bloody clothing matching the suspect’s attire seen in the burglary videos. Griffin was subsequently interviewed and admitted to attempting to break into unlocked cars to steal items, claiming it was due to being on vacation and wanting to enjoy himself.

Based on the evidence collected, the investigating officer determined there was enough cause to charge Reginald Griffin with three counts of burglary, crossing county lines to commit burglary, and petit theft.
