Police Constable Jaspal Singh Killed, Two Others Injured as Nihangs Open Fire in Punjab’s Kapurthala

A police constable was killed and two others were injured when a group of Nihangs opened fire on them in Sultanpur Lodhi, Punjab. The incident occurred when the police attempted to evacuate Gurdwara Akal Bunga Sahib from a faction of Nihangs led by Baba Mann Singh. The Nihangs fired indiscriminately at the policemen who were standing on the road. One constable, identified as Jaspal Singh, lost his life in the attack. The police used tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

The conflict between two factions of Nihangs over the ownership of the gurdwara led to the unfortunate incident. On Tuesday, Nihangs belonging to Baba Mann Singh’s faction attempted to seize the gurdwara and reportedly assaulted two members of the rival faction led by Sant Balbir Singh of Baba Budha Dal. On Wednesday, they once again attacked Baba Budha Dal’s men in Bussowal village.

In response to the escalating violence, the police filed a First Information Report (FIR) and have already arrested 10 Nihangs associated with the Baba Mann Singh faction. Senior police officers, including Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Vatsala Gupta, rushed to the scene. To maintain law and order, a large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area, and barricades have been installed.

Nihangs are Sikhs who carry traditional weapons and wear blue robes. They have been involved in clashes before due to disputes over gurdwaras and other religious sites. The Punjab police have been working to prevent further violence and restore peace in the region.
