P Rajammal and P Murugesan: Mother and Son Die in Fire Accident Caused by Mosquito Repellant

Chennai, November 23: A tragic incident occurred in Tamil Nadu’s Pochampally region, where a woman and her son lost their lives due to a mosquito repellant catching fire while they were asleep. The incident came to light when their neighbors discovered their lifeless bodies on Monday morning.

The deceased have been identified as 65-year-old P Rajammal and her 40-year-old son P Murugesan from Veeramalai village. Murugesan had moved in with his widowed mother after his divorce from his wife and two children.

The discovery of their deaths was made by concerned neighbors who noticed that Rajammal and Murugesan had not left their house by 9 am on Monday. Worried, they alerted the police. The police rushed to the scene and forced open the door, only to find the mother and son dead with burn injuries on their bed.

According to the initial investigation, Murugesan had discarded his beedi without extinguishing the flames. The liquid mosquito repellant had spilled after falling out of the socket, and when the lit beedi dropped on the bed, the fire quickly spread. The bodies were sent for postmortem to a nearby medical college and government hospital.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of practicing fire safety measures and being cautious while using mosquito repellants or any other flammable substances. It is crucial to ensure that all flames are properly extinguished and to keep flammable items away from potential ignition sources.
