Gunmen kill man identified as Akpan in Port Harcourt

Gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed a man identified as Akpan in the Rumukalabo area of Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. The victim, known as Fregene, was shot twice in the neck at close range while he was on his way home after watching a football match on Wednesday night. The gunmen had been following him before launching the attack and quickly fled the scene, leaving Fregene lying in a pool of blood.

According to an anonymous resident, the lack of firearms among the locals prevented anyone from intervening. The incident caused panic in the usually peaceful area, with people running for safety. The following morning, residents and passers-by gathered near the crime scene to discuss the tragic event. Some expressed concerns about a potential mass arrest by the police, while others demanded a thorough investigation to identify and bring the culprits to justice.

Akpan, originally from Akwa Ibom State, had been residing in Port Harcourt for several years. The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Grace Iringe-Koko, was contacted for comment but had not responded at the time of reporting.

Cultism has been a recurring problem in Port Harcourt, with rival groups engaging in clashes and causing unrest in the community.
