MURFREESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Murfreesborough police have just released footage of a fatal shooting involving an officer that occurred at a Jason’s Deli on Thompson Lane on Wednesday, November 22.
On Wednesday morning at approximately 9:13 a.m., a police officer from Murfreesborough responded to a call at the restaurant. The call was regarding an individual who had just attempted to rob the driver of an armored van at an ATM in the same shopping plaza. The suspect, identified as Steven James Murphy from Murfreesborough, was then seen entering the deli, where he also reportedly attempted to rob the establishment.

Employees who were present at the time informed News 2 that Murphy calmly told them, “I’m here for the money,” before proceeding to chase them around the restaurant. The employees managed to escape outside.
Upon entering the business, the officer made contact with Murphy, who then charged at the officer with two large knives. In response, the officer fired his service weapon, striking Murphy. Unfortunately, Murphy later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The incident is currently being investigated independently by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
