A 17-year-old student was killed and ten others were injured in a tragic accident in Gouribidanur, Chickballapur district. The victims, who were from Kurugodu village, were on their way to college when their autorickshaw collided with a goods vehicle on Thursday morning. Due to the unavailability of bus services, the students relied on private vehicles and autos for transportation.

According to a police officer, autorickshaws and private vehicles often drive recklessly in order to maximize the number of trips they make. The autorickshaw driver, Lokesh, 19, was driving in a negligent manner and crashed into the goods vehicle while negotiating a curve near Nagappa block.

The impact of the collision caused the autorickshaw to become mangled and the passengers were thrown in different directions. Passers-by rushed to their aid and transported the injured to nearby hospitals. Tragically, Vanaja, one of the students, succumbed to her injuries. While two other students remain in critical condition, the others are reported to be out of danger.

The driver of the goods vehicle fled the scene of the accident, leaving the vehicle behind. The police have expressed their intention to meet with autorickshaw and private vehicle operators to raise awareness about the dangers of carrying excessive passengers.

In a separate effort, the city traffic police have recently launched a campaign against autorickshaws and private vehicles that transport school children in excessive numbers. So far, 100 vehicles have been booked, and the police will continue to crack down on this issue, according to Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, M.N. Anucheth.
