Wayne Carroll Key Jr. Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Double Homicide of Mother and Child

UPDATE 11/21/2023: Wayne Carroll Key, Jr., 44, has been sentenced to life without parole consecutive to life in prison for the double homicide of a six-year-old child and her mother. State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling expressed her hope that the victims’ family may find peace knowing that the defendant will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Sarah Proctor, Chief of the Special Victims Unit, represented the State during the sentencing proceedings, while Detective Tyler Payne of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation. The Honorable Joseph M. Stanalonis presided over the case.

UPDATE 4/6/2023: Wayne Carroll Key, Jr., 43, has been convicted of first-degree murder of a child and her mother. The trial lasted for eight days and included the admission of over 200 pieces of evidence and testimony from more than 40 witnesses. The State’s Attorney, Jaymi Sterling, extended her condolences to the victims’ family and expressed her hope that the convictions would help them begin the healing process. She praised the jury for their patience and professionalism throughout the trial. The lead prosecutor, Sarah Proctor, and Assistant State’s Attorney Joe Boyd handled the case on behalf of the citizens of St. Mary’s County. Detective Tyler Payne of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation, with assistance from various agencies.

UPDATE 11/25/2021 @7:50 P.M.: Wayne Carroll Key Jr., 42, has been apprehended by the police. The victims of the double homicide have been identified as 37-year-old Martina Lynn Patterson and her six-year-old daughter, Lyneasha Justice Greenwell.

A warrant has been issued for Wayne Carroll Key Jr., 42, on charges of first-degree murder (two counts), second-degree murder (two counts), assault first degree (two counts), and assault second degree (two counts).

11/25/2021: On Wednesday, November 24, 2021, the bodies of an adult and a child were found in the woods near the Colony Square Water Station in Lexington Park. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and launched an investigation into the double homicide. Wayne Carroll Key Jr., 42, is considered a person of interest in the case and is also wanted on prior warrants for burglary, assault, harassment, and child support. The Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information on Key’s whereabouts to contact them.
