Two Youths Beaten to Death by Mob for Alleged Mobile Phone Theft in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: Two young men were beaten to death by a mob in Sahutikra village, Bargarh district, on Tuesday after allegedly attempting to steal a mobile phone. Another person is currently in critical condition, while a fourth individual managed to escape. The police are currently searching for the assailants involved in the attack.

The victims have been identified as 19-year-old Bijaya Bag and a man in his 20s named Biku Jal. Bag hailed from Pandripathar near Bargarh town, while Jal’s address is still unknown. The injured person’s identity is also being determined, according to the police.

Bargarh sub-divisional police officer P. Tripathy confirmed the deaths and stated that initial investigations indicate that a mob attacked the youths as they were trying to snatch someone’s mobile phone. “An investigation has been launched to determine the facts,” Tripathy said.

Reports suggest that incidents of snatchings have been frequent in the area. On Tuesday, four individuals attempted to snatch a mobile phone from a passer-by. Nearby locals witnessed the incident and confronted the four suspects. While one managed to escape, the other three were brutally assaulted by the mob before fleeing.

In recent news, two college students in Chennai were arrested for snatching a mobile phone from a guest worker. The students, identified as A. Purushothkumar and K. Ravichandra Raja, escaped on a two-wheeler but were apprehended by residents. In another incident, a 58-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh was killed while trying to save her son from a mob. The son was accused of mobile theft, and the woman sustained fatal injuries during the attack.

Meanwhile, a World Cup qualifying clash between Brazil and Argentina was delayed due to crowd disturbances. Rival supporters clashed, leading to Brazilian police intervention and Argentina’s players temporarily leaving the field. The match eventually commenced after order was restored. These incidents of violence and disruption marred what was expected to be an exciting encounter.
