ZIONVILLE, N.C. – A tragic accident in Watauga County has claimed the life of a 77-year-old woman. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident.
On Tuesday, November 21, at approximately 3:35 p.m., authorities received a distress call regarding a collision on US 421 near Silverleaf Road. The crash involved three vehicles – a Subaru Legacy, a Toyota Camry, and a Subaru Outback.

According to the State Highway Patrol, the Subaru Legacy was traveling northbound on US 421 when it veered across the centerline and crashed head-on into the Toyota Camry, which was heading southbound. The impact of the collision caused the Camry to then collide with the Subaru Outback, also traveling southbound.
Tragically, the driver of the Subaru Legacy, identified as 77-year-old Sarah May Watson, lost her life at the scene. Authorities confirmed that a passenger in the Legacy was transported to Watauga Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Toyota Camry, 58-year-old Mitsael Palecios, was also taken to Watauga Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Thankfully, the driver of the Subaru Outback emerged from the incident unharmed.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the accident to determine the cause and any contributing factors. It is unclear at this time if speed, impairment, or other circumstances played a role in the crash.
