Teenager Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Stabbing Death of Mehakpreet Sethi

A teenager has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to a stabbing at a high school in Surrey. The incident occurred nearly a year ago on November 22, 2022, in the parking lot of Tamanawis Secondary School. The victim, an 18-year-old boy named Mehakpreet Sethi, suffered life-threatening injuries and unfortunately died shortly after.

Thanks to the quick action of the Surrey RCMP, a 17-year-old suspect was located and taken into custody. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the case and has remained committed to the investigation over the past year. On Tuesday, the BC Prosecution Service charged an 18-year-old boy with second-degree murder in connection to Sethi’s death.

Due to the suspect being a young offender at the time of the crime, his name is not being publicly released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Police have stated that the suspect and the victim were known to each other, and the incident is considered to be isolated and not associated with the Lower Mainland gang conflict.

Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of IHIT expressed that serious incidents like this have a profound impact on all those involved. He extended his gratitude to the Surrey RCMP, the staff and students at Tamanawis Secondary School, and the entire community for their support throughout the investigation.
