A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a body that was discovered in the Crissy Field parking lot two weeks ago. According to surveillance footage, it appears that the incident was a planned attack.

On Tuesday, federal prosecutors announced that they had made an arrest in connection with the murder of a man who was found shot in the head at Crissy Field on November 12. The suspect, 20-year-old Leion Butler from San Francisco, has been charged with aiding and abetting a murder.

Since the body was found in the federally owned Presidio, the crime falls under federal jurisdiction. However, it is still unclear where the actual murder occurred.

Investigators found surveillance footage showing the victim’s car leaving the parking lot. The car was later found abandoned in the Hunters Point neighborhood, where it had been left double-parked for several days.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, additional surveillance footage captured the suspect parking the victim’s car, speaking on a cellphone, and eventually interacting with another vehicle. The footage also showed the suspect wiping down the car’s door and interior with a cloth or towel. The suspect was later seen retrieving items from the victim’s car before leaving in the second vehicle.

The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Hamza Walupupu from Alameda County, according to the SF Medical Examiner.

By identifying the owner of the second vehicle seen on the surveillance footage, investigators were able to identify Butler. He was arrested on Monday and currently remains in federal custody.

Butler was expected to appear before a judge in federal court on Wednesday. If convicted of murder, he could face a potential sentence of death or life in prison.

This incident marks San Francisco’s 50th homicide of the year.
