A man from San Francisco has been arrested and charged with murder after a body was discovered at Crissy Field on November 12th, according to the United States Department of Justice. The suspect, identified as Leion Butler, 20, was found to be connected to the murder of the victim, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation revealed surveillance footage capturing cars leaving the area of Crissy Field around the time of the crime. One of these vehicles was linked to the victim. Three days later, the car was found abandoned and double-parked in San Francisco’s Hunters Point neighborhood, with its license plates still intact. Video footage from the area showed Butler parking the car and leaving it. He was also seen wiping down the victim’s car with what appeared to be a towel before leaving in another vehicle.

Authorities were able to trace the owner of the second vehicle that Butler used, which eventually led them to him. The DOJ stated that Butler not only matched the description of the person who parked the victim’s car in Hunters Point, but he was also related to the owner of the second vehicle. Additionally, evidence was discovered indicating that Butler’s cell phone was in the vicinity of both the crime scene and the location where the victim’s car was wiped down on the day of the murder.
Butler has pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder and is scheduled to appear before a judge on Wednesday. The case highlights the importance of surveillance cameras in aiding investigations and the use of technology, such as cell phone tracking, in connecting suspects to crimes.
