San Diego police have released bodycam footage and identified the man who was fatally shot by officers last week in City Heights. The suspect, Imanol Aparicio, 22, allegedly had a loaded unregistered polymer 80 firearm and a backpack with a loaded 30-round magazine when he was confronted by police.
The incident began when police received a report of a man shooting a female victim in the Teralta East neighborhood. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect had already left, but he was later located in the Cherokee Point neighborhood. Officers repeatedly asked the suspect to take his hands out of his pockets, but he responded defiantly and ran while reaching into his waistband.

According to law enforcement, the suspect turned towards the officers and continued to reach and manipulate something in his waistband. Despite multiple warnings and commands from the officers, he did not comply. The officers fired multiple rounds at the suspect, but he still did not stop moving. He eventually took out a firearm, prompting the officers to shoot him again. The suspect was then retrieved by a police K-9, and officers attempted to provide medical aid, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
No officers were injured in the incident. The officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Sergeant Matthew Ruggiero, Officer Jeremy Avalos, and Officer Jonah Tafoya. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit is investigating the incident and has asked anyone with information to come forward.
This incident highlights the dangerous nature of police work and the split-second decisions officers are often forced to make. It also raises questions about the availability of firearms and the importance of responsible gun ownership.
