A man linked to an increase in violence in Salt Spring, St. James, was shot dead during a shootout with police in St. Mary on Wednesday. The man has been identified as Odane Barrett, also known as ‘Jungle’, and he was from Salt Spring.
Barrett was a person of interest in connection with a double murder that sparked a major feud in Salt Spring. This ongoing conflict is believed to have led to a triple murder in the community, which tragically claimed the lives of two schoolboys. As a result of these killings, a State of Public Emergency was declared in the parish.

The shootout with police took place during an intelligence-driven operation involving law enforcement officers from St. James and the Area Two Operations Support Team. Barrett sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire and was promptly taken to the Port Maria Hospital. However, despite receiving medical attention, he was pronounced dead.
The police have hailed this operation as a significant milestone in their efforts to combat crime under the State of Public Emergency in St. James. Since the implementation of this measure, there have been no major reported crimes in the St. James Police Division.
The authorities are continuing their investigations into the feud in Salt Spring and the murders that occurred as a result. They are determined to bring all those responsible for the violence to justice and restore peace and security to the community.
The State of Public Emergency remains in effect, allowing the police and security forces to have enhanced powers to address the elevated levels of crime and violence in the area.
