Man Charged with Shooting into Occupied Dwelling in Hattiesburg Identified as William Wheat

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – A man working as the Petal School District’s chief financial officer has been arrested for firing shots into an occupied dwelling. The incident took place on Tuesday evening at around 8 p.m. in the 70 block of Everglades in Hattiesburg. The Hattiesburg Police Department responded to a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers were informed by a resident that they had heard a gunshot coming from outside their home. Later, they discovered a bullet hole in a second-floor window. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The suspect, identified as 54-year-old William Wheat, was apprehended by the police. Wheat has been charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling and has been booked into the Forrest County Adult Detention Center. Online jail records show that his bond has been set at $40,000 by the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office.

Wheat is known to be the chief financial officer of the Petal School District, according to the district’s website. The school district has been contacted for comment on the matter.
