A woman from Louisiana has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for her involvement in the death of a 5-year-old boy from Atlanta. The child’s body was found last year in a suitcase in rural southern Indiana. Dawn Elaine Coleman, 41, from Shreveport, Louisiana, pleaded guilty to a Level 1 felony charge of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the boy’s death. The Washington County judge sentenced her to 30 years, with five years suspended to probation. According to Indiana code, Coleman must serve more than 18 years, which is 75% of her sentence.
Cairo Ammar Jordan’s body was discovered inside a suitcase in a wooded area near Louisville, Kentucky, in April 2022. An autopsy revealed that he died from vomiting and diarrhea, leading to dehydration. Investigators determined that Cairo had died about a week or less before his body was found. The suitcase had a distinctive Las Vegas design.

Coleman was acquainted with the boy’s mother, Dejuane Ludie Anderson, and the two women had stayed together with Cairo in a home in Louisville. Authorities alleged that Coleman assisted Anderson in disposing of Cairo’s body.
Last June, Cairo was buried in a cemetery in Salem, Indiana, after a memorial service where a police chaplain referred to him as an “unknown angel.” The child’s name was released by authorities last year when they announced Coleman and Anderson as suspects in his death.
Anderson, the boy’s mother, remains at large, and a felony murder arrest warrant was issued for her in November 2022. The prosecutor’s office stated that this crime had a nationwide impact and described it as tragic, especially since the victim was an innocent child. County Prosecutor Tara Hunt expressed her disbelief that those responsible for caring for the child could commit such a heinous act.
