Late-Night Home Invasion Ends Fatally for Ricardo Cortez in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas — A late-night break-in turned deadly for an intruder on Saturday, 21st October 2023, in the 10500 block of Foundation Road, according to a report from the Austin Police Department (APD).

At approximately 11:43 p.m., APD officers responded to a shooting incident. The homeowner, who made the call, stated that he had shot a suspect named Ricardo Cortez, a 55-year-old resident of Austin, Texas, who had allegedly unlawfully entered his residence. Upon arrival, officers discovered Cortez with a gunshot wound, and he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Specialists were dispatched to the location to collect evidence and interview witnesses. Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears that Cortez forcibly entered the house and subsequently made his way into the resident’s bedroom. In what seems to be an act of self-defense, the homeowner shot and killed Cortez before promptly contacting emergency services.

This incident is currently under investigation as the 56th homicide in Austin for the year 2023.
