A man from Chester has been given a prison sentence of 8½-22 years after admitting to causing serious bodily harm and committing a firearms offense during a shooting at a petrol station last year. Jermear Sudler, aged 42, was due to stand trial for attempted murder and other charges, but instead chose to enter a plea agreement worked out by Assistant District Attorney Jerry Rassias and defense lawyer Paige Benedetto. Sudler was swiftly arrested after the shooting outside the Ninth Street Coastal at Tilghman Street on the morning of March 22, 2022.

Detective Brian Pot, from Chester Police, provided evidence at a preliminary hearing last year, stating that the shooting had been captured on video surveillance, along with an earlier interaction between the victim and Sudler. The footage revealed Sudler filling up his red car with gas at around 7:30 a.m. at the Eagle Save Mart. Another video showed one of the victims in a white vehicle at the Sunoco gas station across the street. Sudler pulled up at that location and the victim raised his hands before Sudler drove away. Nearly an hour later, video footage showed the victim walking towards his vehicle when Sudler, still in the red car, pulled into the parking lot and fired several shots in his direction.

Sudler unintentionally shot a woman who was seated in a vehicle between him and his intended target. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center for treatment. Sudler fled the scene in his car, but the vehicle was later found on Kerlin Street and Sudler was arrested without any resistance. During a recorded interview, Sudler admitted to shooting at the male victim, stating that he had previous issues with him.

At his sentencing, Sudler requested to be placed in a nearby prison so he could visit his sick mother. Judge G. Michael Green agreed to recommend either SCI Chester or SCI Phoenix in Montgomery County. Sudler is not eligible for early release but was given credit for time served. As part of his sentence, he must surrender the firearm and provide a DNA sample to state police. Additionally, he is required to participate in vocational training, trauma therapy, and attend GED and parenting classes while in prison.
